A college student’s casual guide to the Masters Golf Tournament 2009

The Masters starts today, and there are several reason college aged sports fans should at least watch the highlights

March Madness is over, and while the baseball season has started, opening week is fairly meaningless in the 162 game marathon that is the MLB season.

However, this weekend brings sports fans a top-notch event that will hold us over until the NFL Draft. That event is The Masters Golf Tournament, which is one of the biggest golf tournaments of the year.

While you may be thinking “golf, how boring,” think again. The Masters Golf Tournament brings several storylines this year that make keeping casual attention a must. The main story for Masters TV coverage deals with perhaps one of the most famous men in the world, Tiger Woods.

Last month, Tiger returned after being absent from golf for eight months due to a knee injury, and the buzz around him has remained big as ever.

After winning the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill, two weeks ago, all eyes are on Eldrick “Tiger” Woods to see if he has truly picked up right where he left off and can win a major tournament.

A remarkable four time Master’s champion, Woods is used to the pressure and has found himself being many media experts pick to take home the green jacket.

Other storylines to see on Masters TV coverage include whether Padraig Harrington, who won two majors while no one was watching, can win his third major tournament in a row this time with a healthy Tiger to contend with.

Also there are the old men Greg Norman (who has never won at Augusta, but every now and then shocks people with a very high finish) and Gary Player, who is calling it quits after this years tournament...which just so happens to be his 52nd time teeing up on the second weekend of April in Augusta.

Still bored by the idea of following a golf tournament? Well here’s a little game you can play which will allow sports fan to inject a little college pride into the weekend tournament.

Do you attend Arizona State? If so cheer hard for your fellow Sun Devil Phil Mickelson. Moreover, Tiger attended Stanford, Northwestern University produced Luke Donald, Drake University was home to Zach Johnson and the list goes on.

Searching through the list of golfers , finding one who attended your school, then casually rooting for his success is great way for the college student with little interest in golf to enjoy 2009’s Masters tournament.

And, if you get lucky, like my fellow Vanderbilt students did last yea,r and one of your school’s own actually makes a run at the green jacket, (what’s up, Brandt Snedeker?) then you’ll not only feel a little bit of school pride, but also have something to talk to your dad about to distract him from focusing on your spring semester grades.

Our Take

Tiger may not win, but we at College News definitely wouldn’t bet against him.
